I’ve dabbled in astrology since 1986. I’m not talking about the horoscope in the daily newspaper for entertainment, I’m talking about the detailed transits of the planets.

Several years ago I became intrigued with the planet Saturn after a series of changes in my life. They were drastic to say the least.  I’m a firm believer in astrology because frankly, if God created the heavens and the earth, the planets had to serve some ultimate purpose. I don’t believe they were created for show.

Looking at Saturn from a purely astrological standpoint I began to buy books to further understand how this planet affected our lives so deeply. I also started keeping a written journal.

Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second largest planet in the Solar System, after Jupiter.  It takes Saturn 10,759 Earth days (or about 29 years) to finish one revolution around the Sun. Saturn is associated with endings, limitations, and Father Time. It’s a slow moving orbit which is why it takes 29 years to revolve. Saturn is about discipline and his main job is to teach you the lessons you are on this earth to learn.  That’s the best way for me to describe it.

My first experience with Saturn was from my 28th-30th birthday.  I later learned in astrological terms this is called a Saturn Return.  For many people, turning 30 is difficult. I recall crying and I wasn’t sure why. For all intent purposes my life was fine. I had a great job, a beautiful child and a husband. I guess my anxiety came from society. The age of 30 tends to be a marker for where we are in life. We’re no longer dependent on Mommie and Daddy and have to make our own way.

My entire existence came into question during my 1st Saturn Return. I won’t bore you with the details other than to say my great marriage ended in betrayal. My child and I left and I moved to another city.  I stayed with my employer but transferred to another office. I started over and it was a major wake up call for me. I learned some hard lessons. That’s what Saturn does.  If you learn the lesson Saturn rewards you. If you procrastinate then you will be depressed. Real talk!

There are two major Saturn Returns. The first at age 29-30. The second at age 58-60 and the last return, if you are fortunate enough to see it, is somewhere between age 87-89.  With the first return we learn that our life is our responsibility. With the second return we should have come to some form of maturity as well as the realization that we don’t have too many more chances to get it right. I would think that the last return, should we make it, we will be in total chill mold. LOL

Saturn may take 29 years to revolve but every 7 years or so, Saturn will transit conjunct, square, or opposite a natal point. (This is your personal horoscope) When that natal point is an intensely personal planet or point (such as the Sun, Moon, Ascendant, Mercury, Venus, or Mars), we feel its effects in an intensely personal way.

I am a Virgo sun born on a Virgo/Libra cusp. (Born between two signs) I have a Libra ascendant and a Leo Moon.  Astrologically,  Saturn has kicked my butt since 2003.  The hardest influences have been from 2006 until the end of last month.

The good news I offer you today, especially Libra and Pisces people:  SATURN IS LEAVING THE SIGN OF LIBRA TODAY.   When we awake tomorrow morning, Saturn will have moved on to the sign of Scorpio.  That I will save for another time.   For those of you who understand Saturn transits I celebrate with you.  Let’s have a Ki-Ki. (A party)

Elizabeth Spring, a Counseling Astrologer said it best: ” Saturn is a process that slows us down and makes us take a cold hard look at reality.”

Learn your lesson and realize that Saturn’s job is never to hurt you. He’s trying to make you a better YOU.
